Women In Engineering Affinity Group, IEEE Student Branch Government Engineering College Idukki
Women in Engineering (WIE) firmly believes that a woman should be who and what she wants. Our mission is to empower women and strengthen their role in the professional world. We conduct monthly workshops, webinars and networking opportunities to give our girl students the personal and professional training that will help them achieve a successful professional future.
WiE Affinity Group of IEEE SB GECI is a non profit organization that was started in the year 2020 with an aim to promote girl students in the field of engineering and mentor them through college. WiE was inaugurated by Dr. Mini Ulama, Chair, WiE Kerala Section and Smt. Sarada Jayakrishnan, Chair, IEEE Kerala Section. The first event organized by the affinity group was a talk session by engineer-author Mrs. Stephanie Slocum. She is the Founder of Engineers Rising LLC ,a women centric organization, a career coach and also the author of the book SHE ENGINEERS. She spoke about the opportunities of entrepreneurship and how to encourage early interest in technology.
WiE conducts a variety of events throughout the year including paper presentation, which is a traditional academic activity that aims to bring students out of stage fright and test their subject exposure, technical quizzes, workshops, debates, webinars and so on. We realize that interviews can be very intimidating to students and hence we conduct yearly training programs to improve social skills among students. Since code is the language of the modern world and with each year more skilled coders are in demand, WiE conducts monthly coding competitions to give girl coders an insight into the world of competitive programming.
We understand that students face uncertainities in their own knowledge and skills at many instances. With our small initiative, we wish to guide and mentor students and make the atmosphere of engineering more susceptible to women.
